Fall 2010 kickoff

First meeting of the semester was last week on Wed. at 8 p.m. in CC 223.

Notes from last week's meeting are as follows:

Just wanted to drop a line with last week's notes and news for tonight and the next week or so.

At last week's meeting we talked about what Students for Global Change is (a group that works toward empowering students to fight for justice in the world - both environmental and social. It's also a group that seeks to build a community among those who are interested in being activists in their respective field. AND, it's an awesome group filled with awesome people). The next meeting is this Wednesday, the 15th, at 8p.m. in Campus Center Room 223.

Also we talked about our groups (scan through the names and check out the ones you're interested in):

Books for Benin - writing, editing, publishing, sending books for students in Benin, Africa. Writers, editors, English-French translators, designers, marketers, etc. needed for group. Contact Zach Keddell at keddell@oswego.edu for more information.

The Go-Green Team - meetings at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday (tonight) at Lake Effect Cafe. Go-Green works toward educating students on how to be more environmental and where to find information on being as green as we can be. TONIGHT'S MEETING --> Michael Bonney from the Oswego Center for Sustainable Living is coming to let us know about his Carrot Mob and the different campaigns they're doing HERE IN OSWEGO!!! Contact Alisia Engle at engle@oswego.edu.

Pro-Peace Council - meetings on Friday afternoons work for people? E-mail us back with a confirmation :) We're thinking around 5/6 on Friday nights. We can meet every other week or whatevs to get people there! Pro-Peace is about spreading the message of Gandhi and of Martin Luther King Jr. and all peace activists all over the world. We're about educating the population on and off campus about how to be a peaceful person, recognize our part in conflicts around the world, and how we can change things. Meet this Saturday at 11 a.m. in Campus Center Food Court to decorate signs for the ALANA Peace and Unity walk (from West 1st St to the Quad) on SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 19, 2010 (this Sunday) at 9:30 a.m. Contact Katherine Raymond at kraymond@oswego.edu for more info!

Amnesty International - A group on campus that has continually tried to branch out but has dwindled because of lack of support. AI is an international organization that focuses on ending human rights violations. They're very prominent in the international scene, especially with the UN. They've been part of ending genocides and horrible atrocities for many years. We need people (like Alex L.) to come together to start spreading the news! Contact s4gc.osu@gmail for info.

Conscious Consumption - This group takes care of a lot of the fair trade and recycling and Terracycle stuff. We have a fair trade coffee and tea day where we give out free coffee to promote buying fair trade items (fair trade means paying for an item that has been fairly traded - the producer gets a living wage, there are no high mark-ups where someone benefits more than others, sustainable practices, and supporting development in countries all over the world). We also do Reverse Trick-or-Treating where we go door to door and hand out free chocolate with info about fair trade attached to it. We put on Earth Fair and help out with Mother Earth Week. Also, we attend different events where we see Fair Trade products prominently in sales. Contact Katherine for more info: kraymond@oswego.edu

Campus Composting - this group is working towards getting compost bins in the dining halls on campus. We need students to help promote this idea to the students to raise support. We need to collect petitions from students as well as attend the meetings where the campus is going to decide how to implement composting on-campus. Contact Grace Maxon at gmaxon@oswego.edu for questions and answers.

PILLOWS FOR PEACE AND WORLD PEACE DAY - come out this Saturday at 11 a.m. in CC Food Court to decorate bed sheets with all sorts of peace signs. We'll be hanging this up in the quad on World Peace Day, which is a week from Tuesday (the 21st). Also, there will be a flash mob pillow fight in front of Cooper Dining Hall. This will take place at exactly 12:45 p.m. Wear a white t-shirt, pajama pants and comfy shoes. BRING A PILLOW and join the fight. In the end, we'll form a peace sign on the ground for a minute and then we'll leave without saying anything and in different directions. See Facebook Page - PIllow Fight for Peace. Contact Dr. Becky Burch at rebecca.burch@oswego.edu for more information about decorating sheets. Please remember to think "green" when buying/using sheets - go to thrift store!

Hug Day, Lake Clean-Ups, Volunteering - if you need volunteer hours, let us know and we'll put together some events. The lake could always use a clean-up, so get a couple of friends together and let us know and we'll provide gloves and bags. Hug Day - once a semester near finals week. We'll need huggers to give people free hugs :) More to come on that.

Earth Fair/Mother Earth Week- our two big events of the fall and spring semester, respectively. Earth Fair is a fair trade festival featuring vendors who sell fair trade items, as well as carnival games and fair trade food. We want another band to come this year and to have more outdoor activities. Join the planning committee by e-mailing Katherine at kraymond@oswego.edu. More info on Mother Earth Week (which is our "green" week during the same week as Earth Day in April).

This is a LOT of information, but some of you wanted this written out so you could see in more detail what all the group is involved in. There's talk about Invisible Children the group and starting up a Charity Water group. We'll talk more about this as interest builds.

the next students for global change meeting is this wednesday (the15th) at 8 p.m. in campus center room 223. come on out!

Thanks for your time! This is a lot, but choose what you want to be a part of as much or as little as you want! And have a great week. <3 Oh, and check out the volunteer and career fair tomorrow in the campus center - http://www.oswego.edu/student/career/calendar/index.html

Peace,

Quest 2010! Sustainability Rocks!

Hey everyone,

Panel discussion went well last night. There weren't that many people at the panel discussion and our scientist, Kestas Bendinskas, was stuck in Europe due to the volcano ash, and then President Stanley bailed on us. John Moore from facilities filled in for the both.

We had a good discussion addressing the issues we face with environmentalism and how we as individuals can make a difference.

Earlier in the day, Janelle Manning did a little eco-craft corner in the campus center, reflecting how easy it is being green and chic and creative.

Today went really well. The S4GC e-board gave a presentation on how individuals can change our lifestyles to help safeguard our environment and be extremely practical at the same time.

Then the sustainability fair went from 4-8 p.m. with all sorts of awesome businesses that had their eco-friendly products and services.

The night ended with a fun showing of the show, "The Lazy Environmentalist," showing us how easy and lazy it is being "green."

EARTH DAY SCHEDULE:
9:45 a.m. meet in front of Culkin hall to plant a tree with Grounds
12:45 p.m. meet at bus stop behind Penfield Library and Lanigan to plant another tree.
4 p.m. meet in front of Culkin in the parking lot for campus beautification, we'll be cleaning up the area around the lagoon.
AND to finish the wonderful day off, 7 p.m. in Campus Center Room 114 (above the hockey rink, next to that lounge, above food court), documentary showing of "The 11th Hour."

Thanks for your interest!!

State of the Environment Panel 7 p.m.

Hi everyone!

Yesterday went really well with students coming out to show the different aspects of climate change and how they affect different people.

Habitat did a wonderful table on sustainable design. If you missed that flyer, please e-mail habitat@oswego.edu to get that information.

Christina Liddell put together a very unique and eco-friendly presentation board talking about the psychological effects of climate change and how people are affected by climate injustice.

Today we have Janelle Manning doing an eco-friendly crafts corner in campus center, and Rachel Jewell is doing a "green the classroom" information session and presentation during College Hour (12:40 - 1:35 p.m.) in CC room 220. Check out all of the tables in the Campus Center, including SIFE's economical environmental facts!

TONIGHT AT 7P.M. IN LANIGAN 104 there is a State of the Environment panel discussion. Professors from the political science department (Dr. Lisa Glidden), the chemistry department (Dr. Kestas Bendinskas), and the psychology department (Dr. Dave Sargent) will address issues with climate change and sustainability in their respective fields.

President Deborah Stanley will address the crowd, talking about what SUNY Oswego is doing to make the campus a "greener" school.

Come on out! Don't forget, tomorrow is Quest Day. Learn how you as an individual can be more green at 12:15 p.m. in the Campus Center! (Look for Students for Global Change presentation)

Peace!
Katherine

Day Two - Mother Earth Week 2010

Hey everyone!

Today was a great day. We had the Holi color festival in front of Cooper today. It was freezing out, but the lovely people who participated were champs and had an awesome time splattering each other with powdered pigment.

Check out the video!

Then, later in the day, we met in Funnelle basement to put together chains of water bottles around the trees in the quad, and we decorated signs informing about the environment!

Tomorrow begins the day of presentations and tables:

- 12:30 – 1:30 p.m..Psychological issues of environmental accidents – table – Christina Liddell CC across from the point

- 10a.m.-4 p.m. Sustainable Design – Habitat for Humanity Go-Green Kiosk

- 8 a.m. – 10 a.m. Resources for teachers being green - Rachel Jewell Table outside of Point

Check these lovely people's displays out! They've got a ton of info!

Peace and Love!

Day One: Mother Earth Week 2010

Well the weather wasn't the best this morning, so the lake clean-up was a flop. I did the first 50 yards of the lakeshore for about an hour. My hands were numb afterward, but at least my bag was full of trash!

HOLI DAY - COLOR FESTIVAL at 2 p.m. in front of Cooper/Hart Hall/Funnelle Hall. Bring clothes that you don't mind getting trashy (including undergarments!), bring some friends, and have a BLASTY BLAST dyeing each other's clothes, bodies, hairs and faces in celebration of spring!!!

We will make and decorate signs tomorrow (rather than this afternoon) at 5 p.m. in Funnelle basement.

Call me at 607-857-2996 for questions!

Preparations for MEW!

Hey Everyone!

We are coming along in our planning for the exciting Mother Earth Week 2010! Students for Global Change is working on getting visuals cleared so that we can put up signs around campus addressing issues of climate change (i.e. things like "Did ya know?...").

Our two big events are the State of the Environment Panel on Tuesday, April 20th at 7 p.m. in Lanigan 104. We have several professors speaking on the issues that face us across many disciplines in terms of climate change. We have professors from the chemistry, psychology and political science departments addressing issues in particular areas.

Climate change affects us all! We all have a part to play in keeping our Mother Earth green and healthy! Come to our events to learn more about what you can do to help us fight climate change.

Any questions? Don't hesitate to ask: s4gc.osu@gmail.com!

March 3rd - Meeting

I hope the upcoming midterms aren't bogging you down too badly. Students for Global Change is in full swing for Mother Earth Week (MEW) for April 18th - 24th. Tonight at the meeting we're going to delegate tasks - we need people to come to help put together this wonderful week-long event of ours.

We'll be talking about visual displays (trash bags in quad, signs, promo materials), networking and getting people involved (we need presenters and workshops and informational displays), and overall generating hype for the event. We're trying to make Oswegostock happen at the end of the week, so we need people who know people in the music department who might be interested in performing at the event. It's going to be a big, fun hopefully all-day event.

In addition to talking about MEW, we're going to be talking about our awesome t-shirts that we're going to start purchasing. Come to add your input on the t-shirt design as it is now. We're also going to be doing a fundraiser selling lollipops, so if you're interested in getting a shirt but don't have money - no worries! If you grab a bag of lollipops to sell, you'll have the t-shirt paid off ASAP!

Finally, we'll be talking about our new social justice movement. It's most likely going to be an educational week near the end of April (a.k.a. the week after MEW) where we're planning on putting 3-D representations of poverty, war, genocide, and over social issues all over campus. This means that one day we're MOST LIKELY going to be dressing as hobos and spend the night in the concrete quad in our cardboard tents and then walk around class the next day all in our hobo gear talking about poverty. This will be a BLAST, I promise! More to come on that.

So, with all of that said, come out to tonight's meeting at 8 p.m. in Campus Center room 237. ALSO - TONIGHT AT 6 p.m. IN CAMPUS CENTER ROOM 209 - there will be a green kiosk informational meeting. Alisia Engle, the student association director of sustainability, will be talking about the Go Green Kiosk and signing up to put together environmental information. Contact her at engle@oswego.edu for questions. (There may be a possibility to get community service credit for helping with a campaign - ask Alisia for more information).

MOTHER EARTH WEEK will also have community service opportunities as we will need help putting together campus clean-ups. Let me know if you're interested in MEW but can't make it to the meetings.

Thanks, and hope you have a great day!
