Students for Global Change is a coalition of student groups at SUNY Oswego dedicated to empowering students to change the world for the better. We strive to spread awareness on sustainability and how we can better our environment. We also strive to spread information about human rights violations that are going on all over the world.
S4GC is dedicated to peace, sustainability and awareness for the world. Anyone can join the group! We meet at SUNY Oswego Campus Center RM 237 every Wednesday at 8 p.m.
Because we are a coalition, we do have other groups that work underneath the umbrella S4GC. Our groups are:
- Amnesty International - a chapter of the international non-profit geared towards making the human rights injustices known around the world.
- Books for Benin - this group is developing an education system for students in Benin, Africa. Members write childrens' books, translate them to French, print and bind them, and then send them with the education class that visits Benin every winter break. This movement needs a lot of support and funding, so come on out!
- Campus Composting - this group is pretty much taking off the ground! Campus administration is meeting to start the move to put composting on campus ideally in the dining halls. Stay tuned for more, exciting information!
- Conscious Consumption - this group is focused on changing the way we act as consumers, trying to shift the focus away from a disposable society to a sustainable, aware society. Events encompassed within this group are water tasting, fair trade coffee and tea, eco-friendly gifts, and eco-friendly tips.
- Earth Fair - this fall event happens in October during Fair Trade month. It's an event full of fun with local merchants showing off their fair trade and local products. Fall 2009 was our first time hosting the event, but it turned out to be fairly successful. We had free music, tons of food, carnival games, Halloween arts and crafts and all of our local vendors. Help us work toward making this fall's event even bigger and better!
- Invisible Children - part of the Invisible Children campaign to use the power of stories and video to tell about the plight of children and women in northern Uganda. This group is working on a book drive to send books to Better World Books in turn sending money to schools in Uganda. Meetings will be Tuesday nights at 7 p.m. on West Campus, Oswego (further details about specific location will be available soon).
- Mother Earth Week - the big event of the spring semester! Mother Earth Week falls during the week before and after Earth Day. This happens to be April 18th - 24th. Days last year ranged from Air Day to Water Day to Tree Day to Trash Day with Earth Day being the focal point. This semester Earth Week is focusing on the service aspect of saving the environment as well as the economic aspect. There will be a sustainability fair with businesses representing their environmentally friendly businesses! Lots of work to be done on this event, so please help! The culmination of the week is on Friday, the 23rd with a mini-Woodstock nicknamed "OswegoStock." More details will be ready ASAP.
- Pro-Peace Council - self-explanatory. PPC works toward promoting peace on all levels - peace with yourself, peace with each other, and peace among nations. Check out their blog at Pro-Peace Council.
- Terracyle - also a chapter of a larger group. Terracycle takes normally discarded materials and recycles them. S4Gc is working toward getting this type of system into Oswego, as it is not only a recycling venture but also a fundraiser. Check out some of Terracycle's products at its Web site.
Whew! So, there is certainly not a lack of groups in which you can participate. Please don't hesitate to come out to our meetings! Keep checking here for updates on any information!!!E-mail s4gc.osu@gmail.com
